When the days feel heavy
Bible verses for depression and hope.
When everything feels flat or far away, Scripture does not ask you to perform gladness you do not have. It gives words for the low place and points, quietly, toward a God who stays near the broken-hearted. Below are verses to return to, and a gentle way to hold one when you have no energy for many.
Comforting Bible verses for a heavy season
These come from the King James Version. There is no need to read them all. Let one meet you, and stay there.
When you feel far from God
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18, KJV
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3, KJV
When you cannot see a way through
“I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.” Psalm 40:1–2, KJV
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” Psalm 42:11, KJV
When you are tired and need rest
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28, KJV
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22–23, KJV
How to meditate on a verse when you have little energy
Depression makes effort expensive. The practice below is meant to be small enough for a low day.
- Pick one line. Not a chapter. One sentence you can hold.
- Let it be read to you. If reading is hard, listen instead. In Renew, choose the sad emotion and let the app offer and narrate a passage.
- Say the truest words back. “You are near.” “You have not forgotten me.” Even a whisper counts.
- Ask for the next small thing. Not the whole way out—only what this hour needs: water, a message to a friend, a short walk.
- Return without shame. If the feeling comes back tomorrow, the verse is still here. Come back to it.
Why begin with the feeling?
Search boxes assume you already know what you need. On a heavy day you often know the weight more clearly than the answer. Naming the feeling is honest, and Renew uses that starting point to choose a relevant passage and read it slowly, keeping Scripture as the anchor rather than adding one more thing to do.
Questions people ask
Faith, Scripture, and depression
Does depression mean my faith is failing?
No. Many faithful people in Scripture prayed from deep sadness. Depression is a human experience, not a verdict on your faith, and often it needs real care alongside prayer.
Can Bible verses cure depression?
Scripture can bring genuine comfort and hope, but it is not a cure or a substitute for medical and mental-health treatment. Please seek qualified help when you need it.
Which verse should I start with when I feel low?
Choose one short passage you can stay with—many begin with Psalm 34:18 or Psalm 42:11. In Renew you can also choose the sad emotion and let a fitting verse be offered and read aloud.
